Time to Plant!
Well spring is finally here for good and it's time to put your garden gloves on and plant those flowers. We are fully stocked with trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals for your every need. There are a few things to keep in mind when starting spring yard work. Number one is to re-mulch any landscape beds or tree rings to help keep the roots moist. Also with a mild winter, this year will be heavier on bugs. As it warms up you will want to check your evergreens for bag worms, roses for aphids, and bedding plants for bud worms. To take care of these nasty pests as well as any others, come ask our staff for advice on the right product for you.

If you haven't aerated yet there is still time to do so. Whether you have already aerated or not, now is a good time to put down a second application of pre-emergent. One thing to remember though is that over-seeding and pre-emergents need to have a 30 day gap in between, in order for grass seed to grow.

Keeping A Green Lawn
Dandelions! Who doesn't have them? Each individual flower can have over 100 seeds which can literally fly over mountain ranges. Your best defense against these tough weeds is a thick lawn. Yearly aeration and over seeding, along with proper fertilization and watering, are your best steps to a healthy thick lawn. Like I always say, "Golf courses don't grow perfect by themselves." For that handful of yellow gems that do show up here and there, you should use a broadleaf herbicide spray for 2-3 weeks or as needed.

Here At The Nursery
With such unseasonably warm weather we have been pushing to get all of your plant requests in. We are almost there, with 90% of our trees in stock and half of our shrubs and perennials; expect to see a fully stocked nursery by April 25th. Some new and note worthy plants to expect are; the Bloomerang Lilac, Marmo Red Maple, and a whole collection of unique evergreens from the prestigious Iseli's Nursery out of Oregon.
*Check the Omaha World Herald and Metro Values for Coupons throughout the year.
In The Garden
WOW! Just in to April and things are already growing strong. If you haven't already, you should put down a fresh layer of mulch in your landscape beds to help retain moisture during the warmer months. Once your spring bloom shrubs are done, lilacs and forsythia, you should do any pruning that is needed. If you wait too long, any pruning done will remove next year's blooms. It is a good idea to spray fruit trees with a preventative fungicide after the flower petals drop. Should you need any help or advice on spring cleaning in the landscape, call or stop in (402) 551-3654.

Spring is Just Around the Corner
As winter melts away and spring makes its way here, it is important to take the proper steps to help your yard from the get go. Hand raking or power raking is the first step to a healthy yard. This removes the dead grass known as thatch and both clears the way for new growth and prevents fungal growth. Next it is a good idea to aerate and over seed in order to fill in the bare spots and create a thick healthy yard. If you are not going to over seed then you will want to put down a crabgrass/broadleaf weed pre-emergent. Remember you cannot apply both a pre-emergent and over seed at the same time. Applications must be made after a 30 day waiting period. When your first round of fertilizer goes down you should also apply cal-sul, a gypsum product that helps with water nutrient uptake and to loosen your soil. Once your yard starts to green up it is a good idea to start watering twice a week in the early morning so it has plenty of time to absorb the water before evaporating in the heat of the day. Remember, golf courses don't stay beautiful on their own. It takes a little TLC to get that richer green.

Did you know?
The majority of tree roots are found in the top 18 inches of soil, and over half of the root system lies in the top 6 inches. Plant roots need oxygen to survive, and will grow in areas with good aeration, moisture, and nutrients. These kinds of conditions are easily created with proper annual mulching. However poor soil condition, coupled with over-watering, leaves very little room for oxygen and leads to a slow suffocation of the roots. It is best to give all of your landscape beds and tree rings a fresh layer of mulch (about 2 inch covering) every spring, to ensure optimal plant health.
Spring Pruning!
Now is a good time to get out in the garden and do a little spring cleaning. Most perennials can be cut back to the ground or within 6 inches of the ground. Grasses should be cut down to 6-10 inches, as well as any shrub roses or spirea in need of a fresh start. Early spring gives you the ability to see the frame-work of your trees, combined with warmer weather, this is a great time to prune your trees. All trees will benefit from the removal of dead branches and aesthetic pruning, but certain varieties appreciate a little heavier cleaning. Fruit trees will be more productive, giving higher yields with the annual removal of 1/4 of the canopy. This allows for more sunlight penetration and fewer branches for buds to develop, resulting in plump luscious fruit.
