You Will Be Missed
On Monday evening 10-15-12 Harlan Hamernik, founder of Blue Bird Nursery, passed away due to a house fire in Clarkson Nebraska. Harlan, 76, was an important part of the community in which he lived, as well as the community of horticulturalist around the country. Hamernik founded Bluebird Nursery in 1958. It started out as a hobby for him and his wife, Shirley. The couple grew up in Clarkson and returned to the area to raise their family. Bluebird Nursery has since spread to three locations in Clarkson and features 12 acres of greenhouses that sell to nurseries across 49 states. Hamernik was civic minded and was a strong voice for Clarkson and the community. He previously served as mayor of Clarkson and as a member of the village board. He also served in the Clarkson Volunteer Fire Department as both a fireman and EMT for more than 40 years. Bluebird Nursery is now operated by Hamernik's three sons, Tom, Chuck and Mike. Six years ago, Hamernik began H.H. Wild Plums, a company that specializes in growing native trees and interesting plants from around the world. Hamernik was semi-retired in recent years, but still spoke as a respected authority at colleges and universities and horticultural conferences and workshops around the world. Harlan will be dearly missed by all in the industry. Those of us here at Robert's Nursery send our thoughts and prayers to his family.
