Spring mulching is very important. Other than the look of that fresh colored mulch and “new landscaping” look, mulching serves many purposes. Mulch helps reduce the weeds, holds in moisture, reduces the fluctuation of heat and cold extremes.
Pruning can be an advantage, but more importantly, a disadvantage if not done correctly! An improper prune can cause disease and insect issues. It can also cause unnecessary stress on plants, trees, and shrubs. Did you know if you prune certain plants at the wrong time of year it can cause issues on yield for flowers, fruit, and overall production? One specific type of plant to note would be Lilacs! If pruned too late in the season or in early spring prior to flowering you may end up with low amounts of flowering or no flowering at all. It is important for the lilac to be pruned with time for the wood to harden. If not, flowers will be few or nil!
Proper fertilizing this time of year is equally important as all stated above! Lower temperatures allow for higher rates of nitrogen. Slow release fertilizers are not as necessary, but as temperatures get warmer they become more effective.
Weed issues? Pre-emergent is prime time to HELP reduce your weed count and possibly even eliminate them. If you need to place down seed to fill in those bare or thin areas of your lawn, pre-emergent is a NO NO. So be careful.
