The Green Leaf Japanese Maple

The fact that it’s cold hardy in Northern States makes the Green Leaf Japanese Maple a great choice for Nebraska weather. It is one of the first trees to let us know spring has arrived. And during the fall, the blend of yellow and red color makes it just perfect for the season. The height of summer brings with it a surge of new green buds and leaves as it turns a magnificent green.

This beauty grows to a height of 15’-25’. The leaves are hand-shaped growing 2”-5” long with 5 to 7 lobes. This variety of Japanese Maple has upright branches similar to a regular tree.

The Green Leaf prefers dappled or afternoon shade especially when young. However, it will need just enough sun to bring out the most vibrant foliage color in the fall. If you notice scorched leaves in the summer, it is probably getting too much sun. If the fall foliage is not as eye-catching as expected, it may not be getting enough sun (though overwatering may also be an issue). Look for a spot that it will be protected from strong winds and has well-draining, consistently moist soil. Finding just the right spot for this tree is a must. But it is well worth it for the appeal it brings to any landscape.

Before planting your Green Leaf, work a good bit of compost into the soil around the tree. Adding more during spring and early summer will keep the tree well fed. The compost will add valuable nutrients to the soil and help to retain that consistent moisture level that these trees want. Another good option is to add a 3-inch layer of shredded bark around the entire root zone of the tree (but not touching the trunk).
